Privacy policy
Last updated: November 2026
You can read the Quran and Hadith without an account. We collect as little as we can, we never sell your data, and we show no advertising.
1. Who we are
Gen Deen is a free Islamic learning website (the “site”). In this policy “we” means the people who run Gen Deen. To ask anything about your data, email hello@gen-deen.com or use the contact form in the Support section.
2. What we collect
Without an account we store nothing about you on our servers. Your language, theme, text size, reading place, bookmarks, chat history and lesson progress stay in your own browser (cookies and local storage).
If you create an account we store:
- your full name, email address and date of birth (the date is used only to check the minimum age of 13 and to understand our audience in aggregate; administrators see your age, not the date);
- your password, which our sign-in provider keeps only as a secure hash. We cannot read it;
- the time you accepted the Terms and this policy;
- your bookmarks, reading place, lesson progress, daily learning activity, and saved AI conversations, so they follow you across devices;
- whether your account is active or blocked.
When you contact us (contact, volunteer, suggestion or partnership forms) we store your message and the name and email you choose to give.
Technical data: our host keeps normal server logs (such as IP address and time), and your browser may send us short error messages (no personal details) so we can fix bugs.
3. Why we use it, and our legal basis
- To run your account and sync your progress: needed to provide the service you asked for (contract).
- To check the minimum age, keep the site safe, block abuse and fix errors: our legitimate interest in running a safe site.
- To send you account emails (confirm your email, reset your password): needed for the account. We do not send marketing email.
- To answer your messages: your request, and our legitimate interest.
4. Who can see your data
- Administrators can see your name, email, age, role, status and counts of lessons completed. They cannot read your private AI conversations or bookmarks.
- Service providers that process data for us: Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (hosting), an email delivery service (account emails), and an AI provider (see section 5).
- We may disclose information if the law requires it. We never sell personal data and never use it for advertising.
5. AI assistant
When you ask a question, your question and the last few messages of that conversation are sent to an AI service provider, together with verses and hadith our library finds, to write an answer. Please do not put personal or sensitive information in your questions. We limit how often the assistant can be used to prevent abuse. If you are signed in, the conversation is also saved to your account until you delete it.
6. Microphone and location
- The microphone is used only when you press the voice search or recitation button. Your browser’s speech recognition service (for example Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari) turns speech into text under its own privacy policy. We do not record or keep your voice.
- Location is used only if you press the button for prayer times. Your browser sends the coordinates (or the city you type) straight to the Aladhan prayer-time service to get times for your area, and remembers them on your device. They are not sent to our servers or stored in our database.
7. Other services the site uses
Videos are loaded from YouTube only when you press play (privacy-enhanced mode). Quran text, translations and audio come from Quran.com, QuranEnc.com, fawazahmed0/quran-api and AlQuran Cloud; hadith from open hadith datasets; prayer times from Aladhan. These services receive ordinary web requests from our servers or your browser and have their own policies. Fonts are served from our own site. The contact and support forms are protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which checks that a visitor is a person; it loads only when you start filling a form, and Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms apply to that check.
8. Cookies and storage
We use only the cookies and storage needed to remember your choices and keep you signed in; no advertising or tracking cookies. Details are on the Cookies and storage page.
9. How long we keep data
- Account data and progress: until you delete your account.
- Saved AI conversations: until you delete them or your account.
- Contact messages: as long as needed to answer and follow up, then deleted.
- Error logs: cleared regularly by administrators. Server logs: kept by our host for a short period under its own policy.
10. Your rights and choices
You can use the site without an account, clear your browser data, sign out, and delete saved conversations. You can ask us to see, correct, export or delete your data, or delete your account, at any time: email hello@gen-deen.com or use the contact form in the Support section. If you live in the EU, UK or a similar region you also have the right to object to or restrict processing and to complain to your local data protection authority. We will answer within a reasonable time (normally within 30 days).
11. Children
Accounts are for people aged 13 or older. Younger learners are welcome to read the Quran and Hadith without an account, ideally with a parent or guardian. If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we will delete it. Parents who believe their child has an account can email hello@gen-deen.com or use the contact form in the Support section.
12. Security
Connections use HTTPS. Passwords are hashed by our sign-in provider. Database access rules mean each user can reach only their own data, and administrator actions are limited to administrators. No online service is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you we will tell you as the law requires.
13. International transfers
Our providers may process data in countries other than yours (for example the EU or the United States). Where required, they rely on recognised safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
14. Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above and, for important changes, tell account holders by email or on the site.
